6 Ways to Refresh Your Skincare Routine

Do you feel like your skincare routine isn’t working any more, or are you bored of all the products you’re using? Whether you want to start using an anti-aging cream or commit to removing your makeup every single night, the beginning of a new year is the perfect time to assess your current beauty routine and start some new habits. If you’re looking to refresh your skincare routine in the new year, but not sure how to do it, then we’ve got six suggestions to help you get started:

6 Ways to Refresh Your Skincare Routine

Check-in With Your Skin Type

If your current skincare routine is feeling blah, then it might be time to re-examine your skin type. Your skin type can change a little bit throughout the year as the seasons change, and it can also evolve throughout your life. Many people find their oil production decreases and their skin becomes more dry the older they get. Changes in hormones can also cause your face to become more dry or more oily, and it may also cause a flare-up of adult acne.

If you haven’t updated your skincare routine in a while, and your skin has gone through some changes, then you should consider taking another skin type questionnaire and tweaking some of the products you use.

Reassess Your Skincare Goals

Even if your skincare type hasn’t changed, then your skincare goals might have. For instance, maybe you were focused a lot on fading hyperpigmentation, scarring, and dark spots last year, but your efforts have been successful and you’d like to focus more on anti-aging skincare for fine lines and wrinkles now. Or maybe you were struggling a lot with excess oil, but now that you’ve got that under control, you’d like to focus more on brightening your skin tone and achieving an even complexion through exfoliation. If the products in your skincare routine don’t match your current skincare goals, then it’s time to switch them out for some products that do.

Perfect Your Double-cleanse Routine

If you don’t already have a double cleanse as part of your nighttime skincare routine, then this is a great way to refresh it. A double cleanse involves first removing your makeup, sunscreen, and other stubborn cosmetic products using makeup-removing wipes, a cleansing balm, and oil cleanser or micellar water removal. Follow it up with a gentle facial cleanser that removes any remaining dirt, impurities, and debris so your face feels fresh and clean but not dried out or stripped of all its natural oils.

A double cleanse ensures you start with a blank canvas for the rest of your nighttime skincare routine. It can also help clear up your face if you’re struggling with clogged pores due to trace amounts of makeup left on your skin overnight.

Try Out Eyecare Products

Eyecare products are an optional part of the skincare routine, but if you do want to explore them, they can be a great way to refresh your skincare routine and elevate it to the next level. Eye masks are typically designed to be worn for 10 to 15 minutes and are a great solution to quickly brighten up puffy eyes and dark circles, especially first thing in the morning.

Eye creams are designed to be left on to moisturize and nourish the skin, hydrating the delicate eye area and helping to smooth out creases and fine lines around the eye. You can even incorporate both eye masks and eye creams into the same routine, using the cream to seal in the beneficial serum from the eye masks.

Experiment With Face Masks

Face masks are another optional product that will instantly refresh any skincare routine. Most of these masks are designed to be left on between 15 minutes and one hour, and then peeled off or washed off, depending on the formulation. You can also find sleeping masks that are super thick and nourishing moisturizers designed to be left on overnight to help heal seriously dry skin.

Like toners, face masks can offer many benefits, which means you can choose the one your face needs the most at the moment. Pretty much any skin type can use a soothing, calming, or hydrating mask, and many people like to use brightening or exfoliating masks as well, especially if their skin tends to be more oily. Many people enjoy incorporating a mask at least once a week during the weekend when they have a bit more time to do a longer skincare routine than usual.
